Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This 5-page brochure focuses on factors that increase girls' risk of HIV/AIDS. Illustrated with orange and white text and graphics, this brochure aims to provide some basic facts about HIV/AIDS and girls. For example, one fact states "In developing countries the rate of girls' infection is rising at an alarming rate. It is reaching or surpassing that of boys in some regions. Of the 40 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS, over 50% are women, and 50% of all new HIV infections are among young people aged 15-24. Of these, almost two thirds are girls. In some countries in sub-Saharan Africa, new infections are five times higher for girls than for boys aged 15-19."

The brochure also suggests solutions to help protect girls and enable them to protect themselves from this pandemic. It is one of a series to help NGOs protect the needs and rights of girls through action and advocacy.

The different sections of the brochure include:
  • Facing the Facts
  • Why Girls are More Vulnerable to HIV/AIDS
  • What Girls Need
  • What can Girls Do
