Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Center for Mayan Women Communicators - Guatemala

CMCM (Centro de Mujeres Comunicadoras Mayas) is a programme which functions primarily as a center for indigenous women to unite and communicate and to develop skills in communications technology to enable better representation in the world and in the media. The programme functions as a telecenter, providing access to internet to Mayan communities in Guatemala.
Communication Strategies

Activities are determined by the indigenous women who participate and coordinate by a directive committee. The programme lends and exchanges services with NGOs and governmental agencies in order to develop communications technologies. CMCM has completed a video which is representative of their work in 1998 - "Communicacion, Una Esperanza Maya"
Development Issues

Women's rights, giving Mayan women a voice in national and international media.
Key Points

Workshops and training are offered in skills of video, photography, computer use and internet communication. Production services are also offered in multimedia, web pages and video. The center promotes and supports projects by Mayan women in any of these mediums.
