Voices of She - United States
In commemoration of Women's History Month (March, 2003), "Voices of She" was produced and performed throughout the United States. The play brings together the individual journeys of African-American women from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Communication Strategies
The theatrical staging of "Voices of She" involved seven women expressing their reflections on what it is like to be an African-American woman. One woman tells the story of her break away from traditional norms and cultural taboos. Another talks of the pain of political alienation. Other themes highlighted by the performance include surrogate motherhood, traveling to the "motherland" for the first time, female genital mutilation, relationships, and the woes and glory of combing natural hair.
