Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Media Education and Media Competence

0 comments
The Taganrog State Pedagogical Institute held a Russian research school for youth, called "Media Education and Media Competence", from October 18-25 2009 in an effort to:
  • educate young researchers and teachers in scientific and methodological advances in the field of media education;
  • organise a creative dialogue on issues of media education and media competence; and
  • create an integrative communicative space for young scientists to make interpersonal contacts and to intensify the exchange of scientific expertise and information.
Communication Strategies

This effort drew on both in-person educational exchanges and information and communication technologies (ICTs) to engage and network young scientists with interest in media education/literacy/awareness. Because applications to the school were on a competitive basis, priority was given to young researchers, teachers, and graduate students under the age of 35 years, whose scientific achievements and interests were as closely aligned as possible to the themes of the school. Sixty young scientists from various Russian cities participated, with leading experts in the field of professional and mass media education attending the opening ceremony and roundtable discussion. During the conference:

  • The young researchers and teachers incorporated modern media education theory and methodology based on the age of the audience and used all types of media (mass communication), technology, and critical analysis of media texts of different types and genres;
  • Participants studied the theoretical foundations of media education and media competence, the basic theory of media education, and the basic theoretical approaches to the critical analysis of media texts in the learning process (scientific impact);
  • Throughout lectures, seminars, practical work, and creative assignments, the young scientists and specialists focused on mastering modern methods of media education (a methodological effect). An important feature of the school was the combination of the expert community (distinguished scholars in the field) sharing scientific experiments with the young scientists and the possibility for mutual discussion of reports by the young scientists, including testing and questioning.

The organising committee selected writings from the participants, which were then posted on the official website. In addition, this document includes further details (in Russian) and photos from the school.

The fields of application of the results can include all areas of media education, media competence, and media literacy - in higher and at secondary schools and institutions of further education. Possible users of the scientific and methodical results are teachers, graduate students and university students, academic researchers in the field of media and media education, school teachers, and libraries. Proposals from the school's methodological approaches to media education are being introduced into higher professional education at the Taganrog State Pedagogical Institute.
