Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

This article from the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) shows how art is being used as a strategy to communicate about rights and repression in Palestine. According to the article, a 425-mile (680-kilometre) concrete and razor-wire barrier, being erected by Israeli authorities, separates Israelis and Palestinians, in some places by a 9 metre high structure. The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel's West Bank barrier is illegal and construction of it should be stopped immediately. The ruling said the barrier's construction was "tantamount to annexation" and impeded the Palestinian right to self-determination. Parts of the barrier's concrete walls are being painted by Banksy, a British artist, to express opposition to the erection of the wall. For example, one image depicts a view through the wall of a sunny beach shaded by palms, while children in the foreground are stuck on the wrong side, shaded by reinforced concrete. In an other, entitled Jacob's ladder, a young Jacob sits at the foot of an imaginary ladder that scales the concrete wall.
