Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The Geometry of Dialogue explores "the dynamic patterns" that unfold in human interaction. It features 3-dimensional, multi-colour flow charts that relate talking and listening to long-term processes of human development. Conflict is one of the key challenges that these visual models might help address; they are intended to describe and convey the kinds of processes that help people interact in more nurturing and creative ways.

This work is meant to support and explain various chapters in author Dennis Rivers' The Seven Challenges Workbook (click here for more information on this publication). As Rivers explains, "One of the most important ideas behind the Workbook is that cooperation is a more complex and mentally demanding activity than domination or conflict. That idea, from the work of developmental theorist Robert Kegan, strongly suggests to me that a more peaceful world will also be a more cognitively complex and mentally demanding world. The quest for a more peaceful family, workplace or world thus brings with it the task of modeling the complexity of cooperation, one crucial step toward generating it."
