What's Different in Today's Information Society?
This 16 page PowerPoint Presentation examines how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be adapted to encourage wider international use for a large group of potential website users in developing countries. The presentation suggests that old media should be merged with new technology and that it also needs to be understandable to those who are not web literate.
The author maintains that languages found in cyberspace restrict many people in the developing world from getting online. At the same time he describes the commercialisation of the internet and "how this has shaped priorities presently driving social communication processes online." Several of his recommendations include a need to: "speed up work in the internalisation of the internet; develop low-cost voice and audio-based technologies; and include inter-personal aspects of the internet that are particpatory and interactive."
