Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

This 44-page guide accompanies the three Sweatshop Series booklets

Most of the 15 activities detailed in the guide - simulations, discussions, and community research projects - can be used by large or small groups and may be reproduced for educational purposes. They are intended to help participants:
  • learn information about global manufacture and human rights
  • research a topic using the Internet and action research
  • present their findings creatively and logically
  • think critically about the media and the global marketplace
  • use information to analyse, forecast, and develop solutions
These activities can be used to focus on a single booklet (clothes, shoes, or toys), or all three. The guide also includes a glossary of terms commonly used in the Sweatshop booklets.The table of contents includes the following:

I am trying to facilitate a lecture and educate my class on sweatshop labour. This is the fourth site I have encountered that wants me to pay for the abilitiy to educate. I am very disappointed that you do not make such important material available for free as a .pdf
