The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Social Norms Network

Hi and best wishes to everyone in The Communication Initiative network (The CI). In partnership with The CI we have just launched The Social Norms Network.

A focus on social norms is vital for development progress across all development issues in all contexts. Predominant social norms play a significant role in policies that are adopted, resources that are allocated, the people who exercise influence, the space people have to express their voices and perspectives, the choices that are made, and the priorities governments and organisations adopt and pursue.

Within The Social Norms Network you are able to:

1. Find and review shared social norms programme experiences, strategic thinking and research from others in the network related to specific development priorities - for example Sexual and Reproductive Health  - or development strategies - eg Community Engagement. Please keep checking in as this shared knowledge will grow. 

2. Access full documents and/or summaries for the resource and support materials developed by the Social Norms Learning Collaborative - for example:

Social Norms Exploration Tool (SNET);

Monitoring Shifts in Social Norms;

Resources for Measuring Social Norms; and, the

Social Norms Atlas. 

3. Contact the people in the network who have shared their knowledge, experience, insight and data for further insights and ideas - for example (you will need to be logged in for security reasons) click on the network contact people identified in these summaries and then click Contact to email them in private:

5. Participate in forthcoming network dialogues on the social norms related issues you face and challenges you are seeking to overcome - everyone will be encouraged to both share these issues and problems and respond with ideas and suggestions. Please keep an eye out for these discussion posts over the next few weeks.
