"So You Want to Consult with Children?" is based on the organisation's (Save the Children) learning's from involving children in consultations at local, national, regional and international meetings leading up to the UN Special Session on Children. This toolkit intends to provide organisations with useful material for involving children in discussions about issues that affect them. It includes information on how to get started, organising a consultation, planning a preparatory meeting with and for children, having children on your delegation, the role of adults in creating an enabling environment, ensuring quality follow up and guides to other resources.
"This toolkit is based upon the experience of Save the Children – thelargest international children's rights NGO – in helping to facilitatechildren's meaningful participation in the process leading up to, andincluding, the 2002 UN General Assembly Special Session on Children.This process included not just the 500 or so children that attended theSpecial Session on Children itself in New York but the many thousandsof other children who were involved in related events and activities intheir countries and regions throughout 2001 and 2002."
This toolkit is aimed at governments, international agencies and NGOswho want to involve or consult with children in a meaningful way. It isnot intended for project workers or researchers working on their ownunless they are involved in structured consultations or focus groupwork.
