Neve Shalom/Wahat Al-Salam (the Hebrew and Arabic words for Oasis of Peace) is a community founded by Jews and Palestinians that is aimed at demonstrating the possibilities for living in peace while maintaining their respective cultural heritages and languages. The village schools seek to provide an opportunity for Jewish and Palestinian children to learn together in a Hebrew-Arabic bilingual, bicultural, binational setting.
Published in 2001, this book is the result of the author's nine-year ethnographic study of the schools in the village. In addition to presenting qualitative data on the psychological and social dimensions of this educational endeavour, Feuerverger writes from her own perspective as a child of Holocaust survivors to explore the sense of victimhood that affects both Jews and Palestinians. She also shares narrative portraits of educators working toward reconciliation.
