Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Network of African Youths Against Corruption (NAYACAfrica) is a network of African youths devoted to promoting good governance and its tenets – transparency, accountability and good leadership with emphasis on united and exclusive efforts in fighting corruption. The organisation was founded in 2001 by a group of African youths and students from Universities in four African States. NAYACAfrica disseminates information on governance, development and human rights and empowers youth to become active agents against corruption through the provision of education, training, research and capacity building.
Communication Strategies
NAYAC hopes to build personal and professional integrity among its members of future development. It is positioning itself to play a leading role in fostering an effective youth participation in initiatives meant to alleviate poverty and human suffering as well as planning and implementation of Africa’s’ strategic policies, governance reforms and anti-corruption initiatives. It also disseminates information on governance, development and human rights and is actively involved in four areas:
  • education
  • training
  • research and
  • capacity building
NAYAC introduces and emphasises a common culture among African youth and adults by calling on them to act responsibly, preach political virtue and set a convincing example in attempts to eradicate bad governance and corruption from Africa.

The functions of the network is to reflect a commitment and conviction among youth to take the front seat in shaping their role in governance and improving service delivery through:
  • providing and furthering governance, political and social education of young people in the spirit of democracy, human rights and pluralism.
  • engaging youth in designing governance and anti-corruption prevention strategies on national and international levels through constructive dialogue and partnerships,
  • empowering anti-corruption minded young people to play an active part in social democracy and elections both as candidates and voters.
  • promoting a young leadership that is transparent, accountable and exhibits the highest integrity so as to be useful in fulfilling Africa's developmental initiatives and strategies.
Development Issues
Youth, Economic development, Political development.
Key Points
NAYAC targets young people for empowerment in playing constructive roles in good governance and anticorruption initiatives. By specifically targeting young people, NAYAC aims at strengthening social and economic negotiating position of the youth, boosting their self-esteem, self-confidence, and improving their general knowledge of good governance as young leaders. When young people will be accepted as equal partners to governance and development, they will greatly contribute to initiating social transformation processes, leading to more equality between generations and between sexes, and speeding the processes of democracy.

The objectives of the network include to:
  • promote active youth intervention in governance initiatives and anti-corruption strategies in a country's and continent¡¦s quest to improve governance and service delivery.
  • empower youth with knowledge and skills that enable them to play a meaningful role in designing, implementing and evaluation of good governance, development and poverty alleviation policies and initiatives;
  • facilitate and organise some scholarship from its partners for its gifted young members to access to university education and research as a first step in their professional career and expression of their commitment to democracy, the State and society.
  • support youth aspirations to building a new continent with new democratic leadership that are transparent, accountable and recognise the relevance of the youth in the changing world of governance and development.
  • support the implementation of better developmental and anti-corruption programmes in Africa based on tested and effective measures.
  • enhance coalition building and partnership so as to contribute in improving the quality, effectiveness, and sustainability of efforts to prevent corruption and conflicts in Africa.
  • develop and promote new ways in which youths will contribute to enhancing the quality of ongoing governance and development initiatives (such as the Public Sector Reform and Capacity Building Program, NEPAD and other initiatives)
  • share experiences and knowledge, and in turn develop strategies aimed at curbing corruption at individual, national and continental levels;
  • enable youth to get a "foot in the door" to poverty alleviation, contribute to creation of employment, and improve public service delivery and the responsiveness of governments to the needs of its people.
