Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Mbissao Community Radio

Mbissao Community Radio was inaugurated in the Senegalese village of Mbissao in July 2003. An association managed by the Senegalese first lady, Viviane Wade, and supported with Moroccan funding - "Éducation-Santé" - set up the radio station. Operating from the village's community school, the radio station broadcasts programmes on culture, local development, and projects being developed by students. The purpose of the station is to keep parents informed about their children's school projects.
Communication Strategies

The school's four teachers live on the premises and create weekly programmes that recount the week's teachings in French and in Wolof at the school. The station uses a portable FM radio station donated by UNESCO. Forty oil lamps are linked to an FM receiver powered by the heat of the flames.

Education.

Key Points

The school educates 85 village children, who follow the national curriculum in French but are also taught in Wolof and learn to respect and value their local culture.

A public telecentre facility will be added to the station in the future.
