Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Published by Family Health International (FHI), this 28-page manual was produced to support the training of facilitators of the Mobilize Against Malaria (MAM) Licensed Chemical Sellers (LCS) training programme. The key objective of the MAM training programme is to bring about behaviour change in LCSs and shop assistants, from passive "sellers" of medicine to active "recognition, treatment, and referral" of malaria cases leading to an overall reduction of malaria-related morbidity and mortality in Ghana. This manual is intended to provide guidance to trainers on how to present the information and get the message across effectively to LCS and shop assistants.
The manual has the following chapters:
  • Chapter 1: Trainer Instructions and Training Session Outline
  • Chapter 2: Suggested Presentation Plan
  • Chapter 3: Training Evaluation
The training programme is divided into seven modules:
  • Module 1: Mobilize Against Malaria
  • Module 2: Malaria Basics
  • Module 3: Skills for Dispensing Medicine to Public
  • Module 4: Malaria Symptom Recognition
  • Module 5: Malaria Treatment
  • Module 6: Referral and Documentation
  • Module 7: Client Care and Messaging
A Training Slide Deck accompanies the manual with illustrations and pictures to assist the trainer with presenting the material.
