Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Latin American Association of Communication Researchers (ALAIC) - Latin America

The Latin American Association of Communication Researchers (Asociación Latinoamericana de Investigadores de la Comunicación or ALAIC) is an international nonprofit group with both scientific and guild characteristics. It brings together researchers, associations and institutions dedicated to the scientific investigation of communication materials. ALAIC was created in 1978, in Caracas, Venezuela, thanks to the joint initiative of Latin American researchers committed to the advancement of this field in Latin America. They included, among others, Antonio Pasquali, Luis Ramiro Beltrán, Jesús Martín Barbero, Alejandro Alfonso, and Marco Ordoñez.
Communication Strategies
ALAIC's activities focus on gathering together and supporting the Latin American scientific community specializing in communications research, with the aim of increasing and improving the work in this field. It also seeks to promote and defend the establishment and development of the conditions necessary for free investigation, recognition for the field, legal protection, and fair pay for Latin American researchers in the field of communication. It represents the interests of its members, acts in their defense, and makes their issues known to various national and international entities, institutions, and organisations.

At the same time, it encourages interaction and cooperation between specializations within this scientific field and between regional, national and international organisations that pursue similar aims. It promotes the creation of regional communications research centers and supports the formation of national research associations in countries where they do not yet exist.

It encourages research focused on the changes that Latin American societies require in their methods of communication, especially strategic planning which benefits the majority of people in Latin American countries. It participates and fosters the participation of its members in the procedures that lead to national and regional decisions and to changes in the communication environment.

The activities the association has completed include:
Work Groups (Grupos de Trabajo) or ALAIC GT's.
  • Bi-Annual Conferences of Communication Sciences in Latin America.
  • International Seminars of Communications Researchers.
  • Co-sponsors of scientific communications events in Latin America and in other countries. Publications.

Key Points
The creation of ALAIC contributed to the study of communications in Latin America gaining recognition as an autonomous area of academic investigation. It also helped to disseminate Latin American communications thinking, in particular, theories of the national politics of communication and criticisms of the non-development position taken by the media during the growth phase of the countries in the region.
