Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Knight Technology for Engagement Initiative

This initiative of the Knight Foundation funds ways to take technology "a step further", using it as a tool to "inspire and facilitate on-the-ground action." The Knight Foundation is looking for high-quality ideas that use technology to cultivate community engagement. For example, the first five projects help connect people to each other, and to their local institutions, as a way to foster informed and engaged communities. (To read more about them, see the previous winners link below.)

Organisations outside and inside of the communities already sponsored by the Knight Foundation are welcome to apply. Organisations that are not based in the United States (US) may submit a letter of inquiry (LOI) but would need to partner with a US organisation in order to receive funding. An individual may also submit an LOI, but, as stated by the Knight Foundation, an individual would only receive funding under extraordinary circumstances.
