Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

ITGLWF HIV/AIDS Poster Campaign - Global

The International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers' Federation (ITGLWF) has launched a poster campaign to fight HIV/AIDS.
Communication Strategies
The poster features an AIDS ribbon and a large hand, with the words "Stop AIDS. Ignorance Kills. Fight AIDS. A Trade Union Priority". It is available for download in French, Spanish, and English by visiting The ITGLWF site. IGTGLWF encourages workers to download and print multiple copies of the poster, adding their organisation's logo, for posting in the workplace and other public areas.
Development Issues
HIV/AIDS, Rights.
Key Points
The overriding theme of the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers (April 28, 2002) was "Tackling HIV/AIDS Through Workplace Actions for Public Health". In recent years, HIV/AIDS has emerged as a pressing workplace issue. Latest estimates report that 23 million working people are suffering from this disease, 17.5 million of them in 43 African countries alone, creating a state of emergency. Trade unions see HIV/AIDS as a workplace issue not only because it mainly affects people in the prime years of their working lives, but also because the workplace is a suitable venue for programmes for the prevention and care of AIDS. These issues are of particular concern to the most disadvantaged of workers, such as workers in the textile, garment, and leather industries.

The ITGLWF is an International Trade Secretariat bringing together 217 affiliated organisations in 110 countries, with a combined membership of over 10 million workers.
