Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

ICTs in Education Award

Open Access to Education is the theme of the 2007 United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education. Funded by the Kingdom of Bahrain, the US$50,000 prize is divided between two winners. Launched in 2005, the prize aims to reward the projects and best practices of individuals, institutions, and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enhance learning, teaching, and overall educational performance.

Candidates must be presented by the government of a member state of UNESCO or an NGO, maintaining formal consultative relations with UNESCO and active in the relevant fields covered by the prize. Each government or international NGO is entitled to nominate only two candidates per year. A self-nomination cannot be considered. The winners will attend an award ceremony to be held on December 19 2007 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The deadline for application is July 31 2007.
