Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"As new technologies shape the way people access, organize and distribute information, media freedom relies more than ever on a still-developing digital framework that creates both unprecedented power for expression and new vulnerabilities."

Launched on May 3, World Press Freedom Day, 2012, the Global Digital Download (GDD) is a weekly publication and website that aggregates the latest developments and resources on internet freedom. It highlights trends in digital and social media that intersect with freedom of expression, policy, privacy, censorship, and new technologies. GDD includes curated news and relevant events and research for the international development and policy communities. Specifically, GDD provides:

  • A searchable news database, allowing readers to search the entire Download database for articles based on region, topic, or publication date;
  • An interactive map, allowing readers to view news about a specific country;
  • An events calendar;
  • Related links from other organisations providing news and information in the sector; and
  • A weekly newsletter, delivering news stories to subscribers' inboxes.

GDD is produced by Internews' Internet Initiatives team, which addresses legal and policy reform efforts, advances communications access through innovation and new technology, and supports global movements to protect a free and open internet.
