The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Published in 2001, this 55-page training manual details the work of the International Labour Organization (ILO)'s InFocus Programme on Boosting Employment through Small Enterprise Development (IFP/SEED) to foster the development of the micro and small enterprise (MSE) sector. IFP/SEED is working to collaborate with media companies, which have the capacity to communicate information about new market opportunities to a large number of small enterprises.

The document includes four major sections: The Rationale Behind a Radio Programme for Small Businesses, How to Establish a Radio Programme for MSEs, Running the MSE Programme, and Potential Difficulties in Establishing and Running an MSE Programme. This information is intended primarily as a tool for radio broadcasters and production companies that are interested in launching radio programmes geared toward the MSE sector. However, the manual may also relate to the work of individuals or organisations involved in small enterprise development.
