Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Dart Center Ochberg Fellowships

The Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship programme invites applications from mid-career journalists in all media from the Americas, Europe, and Australasia who want to deepen their knowledge of emotional trauma and improve coverage of violence, conflict, and tragedy through a seminar programme. Each year, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, New York, United States, selects 6 - 10 journalists as Dart Center Ochberg Fellows. Fellowships are open to print, broadcast and online reporters, photographers, editors, and producers with at least five years’ full-time journalism experience.

According to the Dart Center, reporting responsibly and credibly on violence and traumatic events - on street crime and family violence, natural disasters and accidents, war and genocide — is a great challenge. In order to gain further knowledge and collaborate with colleagues, Fellows attend a week-long seminar programme including briefings by interdisciplinary experts in the trauma field and discussions with journalist colleagues, and attend the annual conference of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. The fellowship covers all travel and ground expenses while attending the programme. The programme dates are November 1 - 6 2010.
