Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This quarterly magazine examines issues relevant to people working to strengthen civil society across the world. The magazine reaches 4,000 professionals working in funding institutions, international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), companies, governments, and other civil society organisations. The purpose of the publication is to provide a forum for discussion and communication between members of the international funding community, to further understanding of the challenges they face, and to stimulate new thinking on how these challenges can be addressed.

Each issue includes funding developments, interviews, profiles, book reviews, regular columns, legislation and tax watch, and a conference calendar. Themes covered range from civil society development to accreditation of NGOs. Past themes have included:
  • The changing role of civil society worldwide
  • The delivery of funding to civil society organisations throughout the world (i.e., assessing the quality of NGO activity and the use of intermediaries to enable the channelling of support to smaller organisations).
  • The current state of legal and fiscal developments relevant to the funding of civil society worldwide.
For example, the December 2002 issue includes articles on the decision of whether or not to a field office (from the perspective of both grantees and funders), as well as interviews from foundation leaders focussing on staffing and operational issues.

Alliance Extra is an online resource available to all Alliance readers. Published each quarter simultaneously with the print edition, it contains supplementary material relating to items in the print magazine.
