The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Act Now! A Resource Guide for Young Women on HIV/AIDS

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) created this resource guide based on a February-March 2002 online discussion aimed at young women. Moderated on AWID's Young Women and Leadership (YWL) list-serve, this forum was designed as a means for sharing ideas and information, as well as for initiating debates on issues that affect young women in their particular contexts. The forum was also an effort to provide a space for young women to articulate their visions and perspectives for the advancement of the women's rights and social justice agenda internationally. Some of the topics covered included:
  1. Intersections between youth, gender, and HIV/AIDS
  2. Emerging challenges and successes in HIV/AIDS for young people (particularly young women)
  3. Ways in which young people can participate in addressing gender and youth issues in HIV/AIDS programmes
Geared specifically toward young women who are leaders in their communities worldwide, this booklet provides an overview of the online discussions, highlights and profiles young women's leadership in HIV/AIDS, and provides useful activities for those who want to start campaigns to raise awareness and decrease stigma in their communities. It features information, questions, and discussion points addressed to young women, as well as an appendix with a number of facts, handouts, guidelines, and strategy points intended to guide the work of workshop facilitators working with young women.
